Erosion is a natural process in which mounds of soil lose material due to wind or water forces. On sites where soil needs to be placed in certain locations for reclamation or construction, erosion can cause big issues. I am currently helping with a project where we spread seeds on slopes of peat mineral mix soils, so that the roots of these plants will give structure to the soil and prevent some erosion come springtime. The seed mix we are using contains various grasses and wheats native to the area. We calculate how much we need to spread in each polygon using Esri’s application Fieldmaps. Northern Alberta is quite cold and windy now, so we also take into account weather conditions in our work and make sure to spread the quantities evenly.
